Definition of Benefits Eligibility Screening Tool Best

The Social Security Administration has developed several tools and processes to expedite the SSDI and SSI application process. One of these tools is the Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool (BEST). This tool is used to eliminate thousands of disability applicants who do not meet the most basic requirements for either Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

So what is BEST? It is an interactive, on-line screening tool which allows users to complete a series of questions about their case. BEST screens applicants for Medicare, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Social Security Retirement, Social Security Survivors benefits, special Veteran's benefits, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, and it only takes five to ten minutes to finish.

BEST is not used to complete the SSDI or SSI application, and it cannot estimate a claimant's SSA disability payment amount. It also will not access a claimant's medical records so it will not be able to tell a claimant if they are disabled or not. BEST simply notifies a claimant if they meet some of the basic nonmedical requirements and whether it makes sense for them to continue the disability application process.

Before logging onto BEST make sure you have information about your spouse's date of birth, when you were married, the date of the marriage, income information and the amount of your assets.
