SSI - How do I find the status of my SSI disabiltiy claim?
It is not unusual for it to take weeks or months to hear back from the Social Security Administration (SSA) after you submit your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability claim. Given this fact many SSI applicants ask, When will I hear from the SSA? or What is the status of my disability claim?
Finding the status of my SSI disability claim
There are several ways you can contact the SSA to find out the status of your disability claim. You can call them at their general number 1-800-772-1213 or you can go to their website. To visit their website you can visit www.ssa.gov and click on the check application status on the left side of the screen.
The SSA provides online information about the status of your disability claim as well as retirement, and survivor benefits. According to the SSA, you will have to wait at least five days from the date you originally filed your SSI disability claim before you can use their online service. You will also need to have your Social Security Number and your Confirmation number available to check the status.
If it has been months after you submitted a disability claim and you have not heard anything from the SSA, there could be a chance that they did not get your application or it has been misplaced.
What the heck is taking the SSA so long to process my disability claim?
The most frequent question we get on our disability forum is, How long do I have to wait to get my benefits? Implied in this question is the SSI applicant has been waiting weeks and they have not heard any news from the Social Security Administration. If they are applying for SSI the applicant is generally in financial straits and may be desperate for cash payments.
The bad news is the SSA has millions of applications to process, and although they will tell you that they will get back to you within 30 to 90 days, this may be an optimistic estimate of the amount of time it may actually take to process your SSI claim.
What can I do to expedite my SSI case?
We also get many SSI applicants asking what they can do to make sure their case gets processed as soon as possible. Unfortunately, even if you hire a lawyer, a lot of the process is hurry up and wait. But there are some steps you can take before and after you submit your SSI application to make sure you get your benefits as soon as possible.
- Make sure you meet the requirements BEFORE you apply.
- Make sure you submit complete information.
- Fill out all of the forms the SSA sends to you in a timely fashion.
- Get great medical care BEFORE you submit your case.
- Check with the SSA periodically to find out the status of your case.
Hiring a disability lawyer can also help to ensure you have a greater chance of getting SSI benefits at every step in the disability process.
