Sleep disorders, which can include sleep apnea, sleep deprivation, restless leg syndrome, snoring and insomnia, can have devastating effects on your health, including weight gain, hormone levels and mood. But did you also know that individuals who get adequate sleep will also have greater energy, higher levels of productivity, greater concentration and memory formation.



So if you are not getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep you need each night it is likely your cells are not repairing and rejuvenating and you are not performing at your peak mental and physical levels.

This means it’s time to review your sleep schedule, bedtime habits, and day-to-day lifestyle choices.

What’s the first step? Get into a natural sleep wake cycle. Experts suggest if you keep a regular sleep schedule, which means you go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, this will help you wake up refreshed and rested. It is also a good idea to go to bed at the same time on the weekends.

If you do not feel rested it is okay to nap, but make sure it’s early in the day and is only for a short time period. Thirty minutes may be enough time to help you feel rested and still not interfere with your bedtime.

Next, make sure you have a relaxing bedtime routine. Loud noises, too much exercise or too much excitement may limit your body’s ability to relax, making it difficult to sleep. Create a restful space, keep your room cool and buy a good bed. All of these factors will help your body relax and be ready for bed.
